Post-Operative Atrial Fibrillation and Oxidative Stress

چکیده
ver the last decade there has been substantial progress in nderstanding the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF), rimarily due to the recognition of the role of the pulmonary eins and their antral regions in the initiation and perpetation of AF (1,2). Much work has focused on the electrohysiological (3,4), anatomical, and histological properties f the pulmonary veins (5); how they initiate and perpetuate F; and also on the potential role of the left atrium in the erpetuation of AF (6–8). However, little is known about hy and how pulmonary veins (and/or the left atrium) ecome arrhythmogenic in some patients and remain dorant in others. It also is not clear whether the pulmonary eins are electroanatomically different in patients with AF han in normal subjects. For example, in one study the ffective refractory period within the pulmonary veins was ound to be shorter in patients with than without AF (3), hereas in another study no significant difference was bserved (4).

A randomized controlled trial to prevent post-operative atrial fibrillation by antioxidant reinforcement.
OBJECTIVES This study was designed to assess whether the reinforcement of the antioxidant system, through n-3 fatty acids plus antioxidant vitamin supplementation, could reduce the incidence of post-operative atrial fibrillation. BACKGROUND Therapy to prevent post-operative atrial fibrillation remains suboptimal. Although oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathogenesis of this arrhythmi...
متن کاملSerum cholesterol levels and postoperative atrial fibrillation
BACKGROUND Post-operative atrial fibrillation is an important complication after coronary bypass surgery. As inflammation and oxidative stress were makedly encountered in the etiology, high cholesterol was also defined to provoke atrial fibrillation. In this present study, the relationship between postoperative atrial fibrillation and preoperative serum lipid levels were evaluated. METHODS A ...

, coronary artery disease (CAD) is taking an increasing toll in Pakistan with a greater prevalence in females than males and afflicting one in every five middle aged adults. 1 Such high prevalence of CAD among Pakistani population has resulted in greater need for cardiac surgeries. Post-operative atrial fibrillation (PAF) is the commonest adverse outcome of cardiac surgery and it paves way for ...
متن کاملVitamin C for preventing atrial fibrillation in high risk patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis
BACKGROUND Atrial fibrillation (AF), a common arrhythmia contributing substantially to cardiac morbidity, is associated with oxidative stress and, being an antioxidant, vitamin C might influence it. METHODS We searched the Cochrane CENTRAL Register, MEDLINE, and Scopus databases for randomised trials on vitamin C that measured AF as an outcome in high risk patients. The two authors independen...
متن کاملMitochondrial oxidative stress promotes atrial fibrillation
Oxidative stress has been suggested to play a role in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation (AF). Indeed, the prevalence of AF increases with age as does oxidative stress. However, the mechanisms linking redox state to AF are not well understood. In this study we identify a link between oxidative stress and aberrant intracellular Ca(2+) release via the type 2 ryanodine receptor (RyR2) that pr...

Background and Objective: Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent arrhythmia, accompanied with some adverse complications, after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of psychological risk factors, as well as age and gender for the incidence of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Materials and Methods: In this r...
